Disc Pain Treatment

Are You a Candidate For Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

If you have recurring lower back pain, or if your pain radiates down your leg into your foot, it might indicate a slipped disc.

Also known as a herniated disc, this condition can cause severe and sometimes debilitating pain.

Pain from a Herniated Disc

A slipped disc can be very unpleasant. However, in many cases, symptoms will improve within six weeks. About 90% of herniated disc cases resolve within this time frame.

If your disc pain persists for longer than six weeks or keeps returning over several months or years, it may not resolve on its own. In such cases, other treatments, including gentle, non-surgical spinal decompression, should be considered.

Causes of Slipped Discs

Your spine consists of a series of bones called vertebrae. The front part of each vertebra is known as the vertebral body. Between each vertebra are soft spinal discs with a tough, multi-layered casing and a gel-like center called the nucleus pulposus.

These discs provide flexibility to the spine, allowing us to lean forward or turn our upper body from side to side. They also absorb shocks to the spine from activities like running or jumping.

A slipped disc occurs when one of these spinal discs bulges beyond the edges of the vertebral bodies above and below it. There are three types of slipped discs:

  • Prolapsed Disc — The disc is bulging out between the vertebrae, but the outermost layer is still intact.
  • Extruding Disc — There is a tear in the outer layer of the disc, causing the disc tissue to leak out, but the tissue remains connected to the disc.
  • Sequestration — This is the most serious type, where the disc tissue has entered the spinal canal and is no longer attached to the disc.

While all three types of herniated discs can be extremely painful, most people can find relief through gentle, non-surgical spinal decompression treatment.
